Daman And Diu

History

The Portuguese attempted to colonize both these islands and one can see its evidence in the rich architecture which lie in Daman & Diu. The Portuguese formally took over Daman in 1559. Portuguese attempts to take over Diu started in 1531 but they were successful by 1535 after taking advantage of the internal conflict of the king of Gujarat and the Mughal emperor, Humayun. The Portuguese took over full control of the island after the peace treaty in 1539. Both Daman & Diu came under the Indian rule by 1961.
